Rebuilding Together affiliates have provided homeowners with window repairs and replacements at no cost, as part of grant-funded home repairs—not loans—so there is nothing to repay. Published examples include homes where crews replaced damaged windows, installed hurricane-impact windows, or restored windows alongside other safety repairs. The work is handled by local affiliates, and the scope and eligibility depend on the local program and household circumstances. Here are three published cases, followed by how to find the affiliate serving your address and prepare for its screening process.
Thaddeus, 63, lives in Miami’s Village West Coconut Grove neighborhood. Rebuilding Together Miami-Dade, working through the Wells Fargo Builds program, provided him with a new roof and hurricane-impact windows at no cost; the team also painted the home’s exterior and completed light landscaping. Thaddeus said, “Home means everything. It means a roof over one’s head.” His story is published in “Home Means Everything”.
In northeast Las Vegas, 72-year-old Pauline received window and door replacement from Rebuilding Together Southern Nevada in March 2026. The published account also lists concrete accessibility ramps, grab bars and fall-prevention features, improved lighting and flooring, yard work, and exterior painting. Read the affiliate’s account, “How a Las Vegas Woman’s Home Was Restored After Months of Fear”.
Ms. Mendez, who had lived in her Philadelphia home for 22 years with her daughter and four grandchildren, received repairs from Rebuilding Together Philadelphia in partnership with Beacon Building Products. The work included new flooring, handrails, ceiling restorations, and window restorations. The published case, “Home Repairs in Philadelphia Gives Peace of Mind to Neighbor in Need”, describes repairs provided at no cost to the family. These projects show that window work may be one part of a broader safety-focused repair plan.
Rebuilding Together is a national nonprofit network; its national office does not carry out individual home repairs. More than 100 local affiliates deliver services, and the national FAQ says household income eligibility is typically set at or below 80% of the local Area Median Income (AMI). AMI is a local income benchmark. Each affiliate and program track sets its own criteria. For example, Rebuilding Together Houston lists an AMI limit of 50% or lower for Community Revitalization and 80% or lower for its Veterans track. Those figures apply to those Houston tracks, not every affiliate. See the national FAQ and the local program’s eligibility details.
The national FAQ lists common repairs such as bathroom modifications, roof repairs, wheelchair ramps, HVAC repairs, window and door replacement, mold remediation, painting, yard maintenance, and fire-safety improvements. Its Safe at Home program focuses on preventive home modifications; published services include ramps, grab bars, lighting, durable flooring, ventilation, water-leak repairs, and fire-safety upgrades. The housing inspector’s assessment sets the scope for an individual home, which helps explain why published projects range from a single repair to multiple replacements and modifications.
Funding can come from donations, national programs, grants, and corporate partnerships that support particular builds. Examples include Wells Fargo Builds, Lowe’s, Lockheed Martin, Unum Group, and Beacon Building Products, featured in the Philadelphia case above. The work is funded as assistance rather than a homeowner loan. Houston’s program page specifically says its repairs are at no cost, its organization will not place a lien on the property, and its staff and contractors will not ask the homeowner for money. Review your own affiliate’s terms for the program serving your address.
For the Houston programs described above, applicants must meet all four conditions below. Other affiliates may use different criteria, so the local track’s requirements matter:
Applicants must also meet the AMI limit for the specific track. The national FAQ describes eligibility as typically at or below 80% of local AMI, while Houston’s Community Revitalization track uses 50% or lower and its Veterans track uses 80% or lower. Household income means income from every source for everyone living in the home; the affiliate can explain how its application counts income and which documents it accepts. The FAQ notes that many of the neighbors served are veterans, people with disabilities, older adults, or families with children. Have the names of household members in these groups ready when completing the application.
The process starts with the online affiliate map, not an application to the national office. Enter your address or ZIP code, identify the affiliate serving your area, and use that affiliate’s own application instructions to make direct contact. Local processes vary. The following sequence is described on Rebuilding Together Houston’s application page; your affiliate can confirm its own steps:
Demand exceeds available capacity, so completing screening does not mean every applicant or repair will be selected. The inspector’s assessment and the local program’s funding help determine what work is included. The affiliate’s page is the place to confirm its current application requirements and process; no completion date can be assumed in advance.
Having key records together can make it easier to complete an application and respond to questions during screening. Prepare proof of ownership and full-time occupancy, your property-tax status or official payment agreement, and household income information covering every income source for each person in the home. Also gather photographs showing the window damage and other repair needs, dated as early as possible, and note whether an older adult, person with a disability, veteran, or child lives in the household. The affiliate may request additional records or forms, so use its application checklist as the final guide.
The next step is to open Rebuilding Together’s affiliate map, find the affiliate covering your address, and contact that affiliate directly to begin screening. Keep proof of ownership, your property-tax position, household income records, and dated damage photographs ready. If damage is making the home unsafe, an online local community-resource directory can be consulted in parallel for urgent assistance.
